QWOCMAP strives to make queer women of color, gender nonconforming and transgender people of color filmmakers visible and vocal in the most expensive and recognized art form in the world.

It’s QWOCMAP’s 15th anniversary, and in that time we have continuously proclaimed the power of film to give voice to stories that often go unheard and those that are forcibly silenced. In mainstream media, our images are extremely rare and often destructively stereotypical. The disregard for our humanity influences how others see us and how we see ourselves. It is also at the root of policies and institutions that affect our lives.
Yet films, and art, are one of the ways we can show our humanity, and they have always been a part of social change. To paraphrase celebrated author, playwright and poet Jewelle Gomez, in this day and age, learning how to make a film about immigration is just as important as learning how to organize an immigration rights march. Since 2000, QWOCMAP has nurtured over 375 films by queer women of color, gender nonconforming and transgender people of color.
At QWOCMAP, film is cultural resistance, cultural resilience, and cultural renewal. We tell our authentic stories and address social justice issues that concern us all. We celebrate our community in all of our human, messy, triumphant, angry, sad, joyful, fabulous, inspired, fierce, complex and empowered glory. We honor our community by creating stories that are by, for and about us as: queer, lesbian, bisexual and transgender women, gender nonconforming and transgender people of color who are African descent/Black, Asian Pacific Islander, ChicanX/LatinX, Native American/Indigenous/First Nations/Two-Spirit, Southwest Asian, North African/Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, South Asian, and Mixed-race.
For the past 15 years, we’ve worked to build a community of artist-activists who could change the face of filmmaking and the social justice movement. We’ve been learning, growing and changing. And we’ve responded to challenges with malleable, infinite hope.
In this moment, of protest and promise, we are more determined than ever to amplify the visions and voices of queer women of color, gender nonconforming and transgender people of color. And as always, we hope that you’ll join us for the next 15 years!
