QWOCMAP Filmmaker: Jennifer Lin

As part of our 5th annual Queer Women of Color Film Festival, QWOCMAP will present a Community Convening focused on Queer Immigration. We are thrilled to once again present the film Look Again by QWOCMAP Filmmaker Jennifer Lin.

Burning with an amazing idea, she joined our Filmmaker Training Program, where “QWOCMAP taught [her] to set realistic goals” and gave Jennifer the technical and artistic skills to create her film. She describes Look Again as an “updated modern kick-ass Thelma & Louise”, but this time they outsmart the bad guys and the government and “they don’t die at the end.” Anyone who has heard QWOCMAP Executive Director Madeleine Lim speak about film history knows how amazing it is to have lesbian characters alive at the end of the film, even in this day and age. The fact that Look Again follows the twists and turns of a dyke couple June & Kelly doing a tricky tango with Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE), just adds to its significance.

Since world premiering at the 2008 Queer Women of Color Film Festival, Jennifer’s film has traveled the international film festival circuit. Jennifer almost didn’t submit her film to the Action on Film International Film Festival in Los Angeles because Look Again deals with “LGBT [issues], immigration and racism.” The festival is run by film industry veterans and former stuntmen, who surprised Jennifer by nominating her for Best Female Short Filmmaker and her film for Best Outstanding LGBT Project.

Currently Jennifer is working on a web series and feature-length screenplay based on the characters from Look Again. She hopes that her film will create more roles for Asian actors that are not based in stereotypes. She also wants Look Again to get people talking about important issues and remind us all that what you see isn’t necessarily what you get.

Half Life is full of life!

QWOCMAP Advisory Board member QWOCMAP congratulates Advisory Board member Jennifer Phang, who won Best Narrative Feature for her new film Half Life at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival this year. This innovative narrative about an Asian American family, queer friends and futuristic psychic power, has collected numerous awards on its travels to international film festivals. QWOCMAP Advisory Board members serve as mentors and role models for Intermediate participants in the Training Program. We can’t wait for Jennifer to come back to the Bay Area and we wish her a happy life and much success with Half Life!
